Bike Ability

Bikeability

On the 16th December 2009, SYPBP was successful in becoming a Bikeability Training Provider - Registration (ID Number 704209A).

We have consistently delivered Bikeability training for 15 years since registering as a training provider in 2009.

Bike ability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

To assist with the delivery of Bikeability, we have a large fleet of cycles ranging from balance bikes to age specific bikes suitable for both primary and secondary school pupils. We also have a range of adapted cycles for those with SEND requirements.

Our aim is to support and prevent any child from missing out on Bikeability training because of the lack of a road worthy bike.

We have delivered Bikeability Core & Plus modules to Primary schools, Secondary schools, and Youth organisations across Sunderland and the North East.

We provide all the equipment for everyone to take part and have a range of adapted cycles including Pino bikes, hand cranks, tandems and low rider trikes to support children and young adults with disabilities or special needs to enjoy cycling.

We embrace all riders of all abilities, our instructors will always make necessary adjustments in any of the activities we provide to be as inclusive and flexible as possible. This could mean teaching  within a variety of settings, such as one-to-one training, group training at special needs schools or centres, and within mixed ability groups in mainstream schools. We have provided training in all these settings, particularly as more and more mainstream schools are expanding their SEND provision.

Level One

During Level 1 Bike ability training you will learn to control and master your bike. The training takes place in an environment away from cars and traffic usually in a playground or closed car park.

Level Two

During Level 2 Bike ability training you will encounter roads! Level 2 gives you a real cycling experience so that you can deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to school.

Level Three

During Bike ability Level 3 training you will learn the skills to tackle a wider variety of traffic conditions. When you reach Level 3 standard you will be able to deal with all types of road conditions and more challenging traffic situations.
